Finalist "I own Britains Best Home"

The clients were enthusiastic about carrying out their own ‘design and build’ project in the attractive village of Long Bennington. The practice provided architectural support throughout the project as and when it was needed. A design was developed which involved demolition of the 1960s house and construction of two new high standard detached homes – the one on the bank of the River Witham to be the new family home. The two buildings and the site access were carefully arranged in accordance with traditional landscaping principles. Several technical issues had to be dealt with including ensuring the flood prevention bank did not ruin the distant views and also designing the buildings to avoid the main sewer for the village, which bisected the site. Designs for each room were carefully developed in discussion with the client – a talented interior designer. Windows were carefully positioned to maximize the views. The front and the rear elevations are quite different – responding to the different demands. The house was enthusiastically received by viewers of Channel Five’s programme ‘I Own Britain’s Best Home’ as it was voted the best in that round and so entered the final in London. Apart from being a family home the client uses the house as a location for commercial photo shoots.
